Bulk Change Type

Bulk Change Type converts many part numbers to a single inventory type in one operation, from a list you upload. Use it when a group of parts was set up as the wrong type, or when a change in how you stock an item applies to many part numbers at once.

To change the inventory type on a single part number, see Changing the Inventory Type on a Part Number.

Bulk Change Type uses the same permissions as Change Inventory Type. If your role can already change the inventory type on a part number, you can use Bulk Change Type. No new permission needs to be granted.

Change Inventory Type should be used with caution. Once the inventory type is changed, it cannot be undone. See About Change Inventory Type for the consequences of each type of change.

Preparing the file

Bulk Change Type accepts a list of part numbers in any of these formats:

  • CSV (.csv)
  • Text (.txt)
  • Excel (.xlsx or .xls)

Every part number in the file is converted to the same inventory type. If you need to convert part numbers to more than one type, prepare a separate file for each type.

Uploading the list

  1. Click Inventory in the left side menu bar, then click Bulk Change Type.
  2. Select the New Inventory Type. Every part number in your file will be converted to this type.
  3. Select your file.
  4. Click to upload the file and generate the preview.

Reviewing the preview

The preview lists every part number in your file and marks each one as changeable or not, with the reason where a part number cannot be changed. Nothing is altered until you confirm.

Review the rows that cannot be changed before you continue. You can continue with a file that contains them. Those rows are skipped and the remaining part numbers are converted.

  1. Review the preview list.
  2. Click to process the change, or cancel to return without making any changes.

Reviewing the results

The results list shows which part numbers were converted and which were skipped.

Each part number is handled on its own. A part number that could not be converted does not stop or reverse the others.

Once an inventory type has been changed, the Change Inventory Type document is shown on the part number's Transaction History tab.

Changing a part number to Serialized

A part number can only be changed to Serialized when there is no quantity of any kind associated with it. That means the part number has:

  • no quantity on hand
  • nothing issued
  • nothing reserved
  • nothing held in a kit
  • nothing in transit
  • nothing committed to a requisition, transfer request, purchase requisition or purchase order

A Non Stock part number can never be changed to Serialized.

Part numbers that do not meet these conditions are marked in the preview as not changeable and are skipped.
