What does "Item ID is already in use" mean?

Updated by Cheryl Wallace

The message "Item ID is already in use" occurs when an item ID exists as a primary ID or alternate ID or is in the Recycle Bin.

To find where the item ID is being used,

  • Look up the item ID in the Recycle Bin using the Search box at the top right of the page.
  • Look up the item ID in the Primary ID field on the Serialized Items page.
    • If it is not found, proceed to the next option.
  • Look up the Item ID on the Part Numbers page.
    • If the item ID is the primary ID for a non-serialized part number, it will be displayed at the top of the page.
    • If the item ID is an alternate ID for a non-serialized part number, the primary ID will be displayed at the top of the page. Click the Alternate IDs tab to view additional item IDs.

You can now decide whether to change the original item ID in order to reuse the item ID or use a different item ID for the new item.

If this does not resolve the problem, contact Support.
