What is non stock inventory?

Updated by Cheryl Wallace

Non stock (or non-stock) inventory is used to record something going out without maintaining quantities on hand or expecting the inventory back. These can be virtual items, VMI (vendor managed inventory), or items where the stocking point does not maintain an accurate inventory. Transaction receipts can be printed and usage reports can provide interesting statistical data over time.

Some creative uses for non stock part numbers:

  • Include non stock parts on requisitions to give visibility to special order items to indicate if they will be "pick up" or "for delivery".
  • Use a non stock item to record vehicle refueling on an issue where tracking the fill-up amount is important but not tracking fuel in your inventory.
  • Issue non stock items when using Transaction Rental to charge for flat-fee delivery or per-mile rate (enter the quantity) or per-hour labour (enter the quantity).
  • Create manual charges using non stock items for variable credits or supplemental charges when using Transaction Rental.
  • Issue a non stock item for an "unnecessary tool crib visit".
  • Issue a non stock item when a job closes to generate a transaction receipt to indicate "no outstanding tools / all clear".
