Exceptions Returning Bulk or Consumable Inventory

When an entity returns non-serialized inventory issued to them, it can be returned to at the original stocking location or any other stocking location. The entity can return up to the total quantity issued to them for the item issued across all stocking locations at any single stocking location.

Example: Entity ABC has 15 of Item ID 215501 issued from stocking location MAIN and 2 issued from stocking location REMOTE.

  • Entity ABC can return up to 17 of the Item ID 215501 at either MAIN or REMOTE. Entity ABC's outstanding transactions will be reconciled.
  • Entity ABC can return in excess of 17 of Item ID 215501 at MAIN only if there are more than 15 of Item ID 215501 issued at MAIN under different entities.
  • Entity ABC can return in excess of 17 of Item ID 215501 at REMOTE only if there are more than 2 of Item ID 2155001 issued at REMOTE under different entities.

Partial quantities cannot be returned. Consider using a "free issue" cabinet or box where these half-used cans, rolls of tape, boxes of fasteners, or similar items are stored when brought back to the tool crib. These partially used items can then be distributed without checking them out.

When an entity returns non-serialized inventory not issued to them (third party return), only the quantity up to the total issued from that stocking location can be returned. The oldest transaction that matches the issue location, kit, work order, job, sub job, or cost code will be credited. Any quantities that cannot be matched to an issue will be added to inventory.

Example: For Item ID 540078, a total of 72 are issued to three entities from the MAIN stocking location, 50 are issued to two entities from the REMOTE stocking location, and none are issued from the TURNAROUND stocking location. None of these are issued to Entity ABC.

  • Entity ABC can return up to 72 of Item ID 540078 at MAIN. The outstanding transactions for these entities will be reconciled starting from the oldest transaction matching the references on the issue transaction.
  • Entity ABC can return up to 50 of Item ID 540078 at REMOTE. The outstanding transactions for these entities will be reconciled starting from the oldest transaction matching the references on the issue transaction.
  • Entity ABC cannot return any of Item ID 540078 at TURNAROUND.

The item quantity on hand is always increased at the returning location. The issued quantity is always reduced at the issue location.
