What does "Error - String or binary data would be truncated" mean?

Updated by Cheryl Wallace

The error "Error - String or binary data would be truncated" is sometimes also followed by "The statement has been terminated." This error can occur most often when importing data but can also occur when performing other tasks like Merge Part Number. This message indicates that data for a field is too long and the process has stopped without completing.

To resolve this,

  • for imports, review the Instructions tab of the import template to be certain you are not exceeding the limits for the field columns.
  • for other functions, review the data on the page for any long text strings or very large numbers.

If this does not resolve the problem or if you have further questions, email Support including a screenshot of the screen showing the error and describe what you were doing when it occurred. This will help us troubleshoot the problem for you. It will also allow us to put a clearer error message for that specific circumstance.
